A Christmas Gift

Some time ago, I did a painting of two delightful dogs, Saffie and Lulu (will be posting them soon). The owner's sister saw the picture and between the two of them, came up with the idea to have their mother's precious dog painted for her for Christmas.

Now, because it was a Christmas present, I never got to meet the dog or take my own photographs. It can be a bit unnerving painting from photographs of someone you've never met, but in the end we agreed on the best way to crop the picture and this is the result.

Her name is Emmy and she is much loved by her owners. And you can understand why, looking at that cute face!

Today is January 1.

Today is the start of a new year that I hope will bring all the richest blessings, peace, harmony and happiness into all your lives.

There is something strong and hopeful about the following excerpt from the poem by Tennyson that speaks to me at each celebration of a New Year. Long ago, I loved singing in my high school chorus and it was one of my favorites.
This little painting was completed while enjoying the snow from inside, painting side by side with my grandchildren in Colorado,this past Christmas.

Ring out, wild bells, to the wild sky,
The flying cloud, the frosty light;
The year is dying in the night;
Ring out, wild bells, and let him die.

Ring out the old, ring in the new,
Ring, happy bells, across the snow:
The year is going, let him go;
Ring out the false, ring in the true.

Ring out the grief that saps the mind,
For those that here we see no more,
Ring out the feud of rich and poor,
Ring in redress to all mankind.

Ring out a slowly dying cause,
And ancient forms of party strife;

I did this painting for this week's Daily Paintworks Challenge - Change the Color. The idea is if you keep all the values accurate, you can really make the colors anything you want. I don't normally recommend changing colors - it is surprising how many things each color will affect - but it was a fun exercise, and I am surprisingly happy with the result. Here are a few process photos.

This is my contribution to this week's WDE at Wet Canvas. Christine was the great host. She supplied the terrific reference photos.

My title refers to the horse on the run and me having fun.

This is something a little different for me.
It's acrylic and Pitt Pen on 7x5 hardboard.
The hardboard is really slick, so the watery acrylic beaded and puddled much, I guess, like Yupo paper. I like the expressionist color and paint movement.

With the holidays quickly drawing to a close, I decided to participate in the latest DPW challenge which was to paint the aftermath of the holidays. Though an empty bag and used ribbon represent the leftovers, I hope the good feelings of the season lingers far longer.

For my second in this series I decided to play around with stacking and a cozy, little grouping. It may look simple but I tried about 30 minutes worth of different combinations with the bottles in different positions and stacks, etc. Oh man. Often the simplest compositions are the most difficult to come up with.

I was fortunate enough to run into an old friend at a recent party. He and I got reacquainted and he saw my art work on my business cards and I saw his beautiful 2 year old twins. He then asked me to paint his twins for a Christmas gift for their mother. Yes, it was only two weeks away but I was willing to do this for a dear friend. This is Christian and Hayden. We were only able to meet two days before Christmas for the delivery so I wrapped his precious twins in a box for him. When he opened the box, he smiled, said "She's going to love them...I think I'm going to cry." That sentiment was his Christmas gift to me.

The face on this little basset's face says it all! He fits the aftermath scenario.
Actually I reached back and copied a painting I made in Dec. 2010. I tell ya, folks, copying ain't easy! It's a great learning experience in itself.

The reference for this painting was taken at the Olympic Observation Tower in Munich, overlooking the Olympic village.

Over the holidays I went to an children's illustrator event at Chemer's Gallery, the same gallery that represents me. With their original artwork hanging on the walls, five fabulous illustrators signed books and gave talks on their process and/or their experiences when creating work for children's books.

Mary Grandprix (Harry Potter) talked about how the Harry Potter characters were fashioned after her family, including using her own image for Harry. And Robin Preiss Glasser (Fancy Nancy) spoke of sometimes drawing 200 images of the same character in the same gesture to get it "just right". Wow!

So often since, I think of these two inspirational artists particularly when I am struggling at the easel even a bit. The process and disciple that it takes to be a success, even if success means (if just for today) that I am happy with the way I painted the woman's face because I did it 8 times, then I will take it. Success as an artist, however it is defined does not come just because we might want it but by working at it enough with a willingness to draw or paint until it is "just right". That is my observation anyway.

I've been wanting to use these crazy salt shakers since I bought them a couple of years ago, but just didn't have a well-formed idea of what to do with them. A few weeks ago, I did some serious brainstorming and discovered I had the perfect set piece in Frogs, which has been tucked away on my bookshelf for years. Take a minute to check out the central illustration on the book jacket -- I couldn't have special ordered a more fitting scene!!

As we come to the end of the year, I'm going through the flat file drawers and pulling out a few paintings that I set aside because I ran into problems and needed a break from them. I have a bunch of new things on the to-do list as well and I'm looking forward to a creative and fun new year.

I found this cute little hippo at a thrift store near the coast. He's actually a toothpick holder - got a big hole in his back. But I thought he was perfect paired with this single cherry. They're on a date - doin' a little disco dancing while the hippo contemplates his next move.

After what was a most wonderful Christmas that included the birth of a new Cooper in our extended family on Christmas eve, getting back into the studio seemed not so important but still something I was looking forward to.

Looking through reference photos I came across this crowded scene in a church in Prague. Awed by the Gothic exterior and Byzantine interior there was something magnificent to see no matter where you turned. I was a little fearful about tackling this kind of scene after not painting for so long but I jumped in with both feet. After all, it's just shape, value and color...right?

I really liked the sly guy...Mr. fox. I had done a painting of a wolf peering out through autumn leaves in '06. I went back and found where I had posted it on my blog so that I could use it as reference. Then, I just used the same idea for this red fox.

For me, Christmas came a few days early.

Sharon Wright, an amazing portrait artist living somewhere in England! sent me a portrait she did some time ago, and which I was lucky enough to 'win' in a lucky draw she had, oh, nearly two years ago!

It's taken that long to get to me, living at the bottom end of Africa. No, the postal service was not to blame. The cost of posting was! We tried to think of various (less expensive) ways of getting this lovely lady to her new sunny home, but in the end, Sharon just decided to send it anyway.

And here she is, ready to be taken to the framers as soon as they get back from lounging around on the beach!

The reference for this was taken at a workshop last summer. I loved the light hitting the umbrellas and parts of the artists as they were setting up for a day of painting.

With the many activities of the season my painting and posting have had to take a back seat to it all. It was fun to get into the studio today if even for a short time, it felt a little like I was playing hookie!

This is a question for you bloggers. Have you been having problems with the click to enlarge feature on Blogger? Ever since they started the "Shadow Box" a few months ago, my images won't enlarge and it drives me nuts. The "Shadow Box" feature is the black slideshow page that appears when an image is clicked on. Any thoughts on this will be very much appreciated.

Update:12,27,11...Looks as if the problem of enlarging the image is solved, at least with this post...Lol. This "shadow box"-Picasa stuff has got it all messed up. Call me retro if you like. I'd like the good old way back.

My buddy Sarah gave me these lovely persimmons right before I left last week for Illinois ... which is where I met my latest batch of troublemakers. We were a bit cozy in the space, which worked out since it was especially cold outside. Here they are acting like good little artists:

Much like this sentry nutcracker, I am (mostly) ready and waiting for all that this season entails.

This painting started in class on Friday, but by the end of the day I didn't like what I had done. Knocking it back with a large brush took it back to a place where I could re-evaluate what was important. Funny how looking at it blurred made my decision on how to proceed clearer...and me happier with it.

Ramesh Jhawar's interest in color and the play of light and shadow is immediately evident in the works he shares on his blog. From the brilliant colors of an urban street scene to the muted tones of a rural landscape, he skillfully captures the essence of his subject. Ramesh's compositions are strong and he incorporates the details of a subject without losing the freshness that is the hallmark of the watercolor medium.

Although he started out getting a degree in commerce and working in his family business, he was inspired to become a professional painter after taking up oil painting. He has also worked in other media in the past, but now concentrates on watercolor, and he is garnering increasing attention on the international level with inclusion in the most recent issue of the French art magazine, Practique Des Arts.

When looking at the work of the masters and modern day masters, I find edge work so intriguing. With that in mind, I set up this still life in class last week. My goal was to be very conscious of the edges, something I often fail to think about. It made it harder but also more fun in a way. I want to play around with that a bit more after the holidays.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Reflections On Water Challenge posted by Layne Cook. Her instructions were to paint something showing the many facets of reflections.
If you can't get excited about painting water, paint something else that's reflective (but not a mirror- that's too direct).

After much mulling around of ideas, I came up with Christmas bulbs as the reflector...very timely!
Then I wondered "what to reflect?". Shortly thereafter, a good friend dropped off a few christmasy goodies her sister had baked. Shazaaam!! There was a Christmas tree cookie! Problem solved!

I am away teaching a 5-day workshop in Aurora, IL, in case you thought I had dropped off the face of the earth. I've got a very interesting group. One keeps falling out of her chair and tripping over things in the class. Another is covered head to toe in paint at the end of each day. The others just wine about how I make them work hard. Come to think of it - this is pretty normal.

I believe it was Winston Churchill who said, " Painting a picture is like trying to fight a battle."
I would like to add, "Especially portraits." This one was a battle....I have a feeling the painting won. I am frazzled.
My first mistake was trying to impose deep shadows to the left side of her face (our rt.). The photo reference was more straight on light...like a flash. I wanted to add the shadows to give it a dramatic lighting effect. That's a hard thing to do...just out of your head, with any believability.
After fighting with it for two hrs., I gave up on that idea. So I spent another two hrs. of trying to do the light a little more like the photo.
Stick a fork in it...it's done.

We got our new silverware from IKEA, and the side benefit is they make great props! They have lovely shapes, even from the end. As for my other props, I find myself getting mostly the same basic stuff again. I already have 7 different white cups and several little white plates. I had this exact glass pourer before, and of course you've already seen a few of my new bottles and jars. I have my eye out for different stuff, of course, but I seem to be able to endlessly compose with cups, plates, fruit and silverware.

This is a new size for me - 5x7in. I saw a student recently painting something horizontal and I thought - why on earth have I been doing squares, exclusively for so long?! Duh.

And regarding the title, sometimes I look up words in the thesaurus so both words start with the same letter. Silly, I know. Troglodytic means someone who lives a secluded life, who is unaquainted with affairs of the world. Maybe the tomato wants to live that way, but it sure looks lonely.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Best Friend Challenge posted by Polly Madel.
Polly said,"I thought that it would be fun to do a challenge of man's best friend and his/her favorite things."

A toy poodle, Dolly was 6.3 pounds of unconditional love. She didn't seem to prefer any particular toy. I believe Dolly considered me her possession. She always seemed to be watching out for me as much as I watched out for her. Little Dolly was nearly 17 years old. She passed in Feb. 2010.
She has left a hole in this house and in my heart, but I realize such is the nature of life.

Well meaning bloggers and friends have said get another dog. Truthfully...At this point in my life, I'm just not physically capable of caring for a dog properly. I just wrap myself in warm memories...I'm satisfied with that.

Hide Behind Stacks

Someone asked how I get the reflections at the bottom. I have a big piece of glass - just regular glass - that I put in the bottom of my shadow box. I tape the front edge and only handle it from that end so I don't cut myself. I generally put down my cloth or paper first so I have some color or something underneath. In this case I had a gray yellow behind and white underneath.

" Chez Marie " is a small cafe in Paris very close to Montmartre. I thought I would post this drawing I just finished for CHRisTMAS.
First the place is red and second it is called Chez Marie and I thought it could be the new version for the stable where christ was born, " At Mary's place " After all he was put in a trough and that's where you put the food you give to the animals, since he is feeding us still I thought it a perfect correlation.

We spent most of the day painting ... the house. The living room is now a lovely yellow, and the kitchen terra cotta red. Is it a coincidence the colors are exactly the same as in the last house? Then this evening we had some friends over for dinner. This is my excuse for not having added any links yet to my blog roll. I am going to add a few tonight and more tomorrow.

A Son's gift

Last month I was contacted by the step-son of my fellow officer Roger who passed away in November of 2009. I had painted a small memorial piece back then. The son wanted to commission a piece for his mother (Roger's wife) as a gift during his surprise visit home during Thanksgiving. The son relayed that he grew up to love Roger as his own father. He was flying in from Germany where he was stationed serving in our Armed Forces. Since this was a spur of the moment trip, I only had two weeks to get the image and send proofs an changes back and forth to the son. In the end, I was honored to have been asked to be a part of a precious gift from such a loving and thoughtful man and Cindi is truly blessed to have the love of a special son. I told both Cindi and her son I wanted to capture Roger's twinkle in his eye. He always seemed to know something that amused him and he was a brilliant comet in our life. Hugs to all my friends and family during the holiday season and all through out the year.

Time on my hands! Well, time taken out from the art room. So the need to update my really neglected blog seemed a good idea. I do try - I think 'now's the day I'm going to blog' - but it doesn't happen. And it's so nice and sunny and hot, I should really be in the garden! Ok, will get there after posting this painting I did some time ago.

It's from a photo taken from and given to me with kind permission by Marty. I cannot sing her praises as both a photographer and an artist enough. And she is so generous letting me use some of her exquisite images.

December 16 is usually the official start of our holiday period which lasts up until the 2nd week of January. Lovely hot summery days with time off from my classes, hopefully giving me lots more time to paint. And to watch cricket. Last month we hosted Australia and this month it will be Sri Lanka. Some great cricket action to come.

It has taken me almost 3 months to get around to this, but one of things that happened right after the fire, when suddenly my blog was changed under my feet by blogger, was my blogroll (my list of links to other artists) was erased and lost forever. When I revamped my blog I made a short list of artists off the top of my head and stopped there. I've been meaning to ask - could you please email me with a link if I had you listed before? I NEVER experienced a fall in Texas like this one here in Eugene. The leaves have been absolutely spectacular. And there are still quite a few of them hanging on. I found this one on the way home from Jacob's bus-stop and HAD to paint it. It was orange on one side and mostly red on the other side, hence the awesome glow.

Stan's work has been widely exhibited and collected and he has an impressive string of awards to his name. He recently became a Signature Member of the National Watercolor Society and is featured as one of the ten "Ones to Watch" in the December 2011 issue of Watercolor Artist magazine.

I am shooting now for next summer, but will be happy with the end of next year. I was keeping it under wraps until I was at least halfway through, which I now am.

I went to a figure session tonight and lo and behold there was a naked tomato! It was shy so it undressed behind stacks of cups and refused to come out into the light. Ok, really, our model tonight was a good-looking African American guy, not shy at all. After the first break he didn't quite make it back into the same pose. I tried to change my composition accordingly, but I just ended up making a mess. So I wiped it off and called it lesson learned.

With Thanksgiving over, and my holiday commissions (almost) finished, I wanted to just paint something fun. This little piggy was it. He was first painted as a fundraising piece for Paws of The Planet, a local charity dedicated to making a positive difference for animals. He was painted again today just because I liked the image with the light coming through his ears and he really does seem to be going "wee, wee, wee, all the way home"!

Recently, I visited a gallery in Charleston SC and what caught and held my attention were some very beautiful paintings of course, but mostly a dog named Dog. We became instant friends. He invited me to scratch his belly as he lay upon an oriental rug. And he gave me a big smile for the photo op, so I just had to paint him.

I am a person whose company dogs seem to enjoy.
Even BIG dogs. Mostly BIG dogs. I am only 5 feet tall, so when approached by dogs that appear horse like, I am immediately concerned.
And they always want tongue kisses!!! Yikes.

But....I do have affection for these God-given spirits to people. How can I not?
How many people actually jump for joy when you enter a room? Squeal with delight to see you? Take you for walks on even the dreariest of days?

So this week will be my tribute to dogs week.
Got a few small paintings to "bark about", hee hee.
There will be about 3 finished paintings to share. Then back to the easel.

I will gladly accept commissions for your dog's portrait. 6x8 and larger.

I borrowed this very cool pig from my little friend Ellie. Ellie is 2, and honestly I'm not sure she understood why I was taking her piggy bank, or if she even noticed. Before doing this painting, I went and viewed loads of his images to let it all sink in. I think that may have helped with the outcome. I have been attempting his style for a long time, and I feel this is the closest I've ever come.

I thought about titling this "No Cellphone". With tourists everywhere, the reference for this painting was taken in an alley in Prague. This guy must have really been enjoying that cigarette because he never noticed me snapping photos. Or maybe he's just used to it with all the visitors to his beautiful city. Today, Black Friday, instead of joining the shopping masses, we drove out to the coast with the idea of taking a photo for the Marine Christmas card. It turned into a complete disaster because SOMEONE (I'm not naming names) forgot not only the tripod, but the memory card as well. It was a gorgeous day, and we consoled ourselves by collecting rocks. Ok ... it was all me, dang it - I forgot the stuff and I collected rocks. My poor guys.

This is my contribution to this week's DPW's The Paint your Toaster Challenge posted by Shelley Ross. Shelley wrote: The shiny metal surface creates a playground for tinkering with reflections. The manufactured straight lines are an interesting alternative to organic objects.

My new toaster has a non reflective plastic coating, so it wouldn't do. I dug around and found my old one taking up residence in a corner of my basement. I gave one side a quick Windex shine and set a glass of French merlot wine in front of it.
So this is a French toast to all my art and blogging friends! Thanks for making my day every day.

Mendocino Angel Trumpets

When I went to Mendocino with my kids this last summer, flowers were blooming everywhere around the quaint town of seaside Mendocino. I loved this tree of Angel Trumpets blooming near the entrance of one store. It took me a while to get the gumption to paint them because I put so much pressure on me to do their beauty justice. I think I'm almost there and now want to paint more.

Demo painting: Dippy Duck #3...

This demo piece was lurking unfinished in the flat files so I decided to play with the background. I've painted this image twice before, initially with a plain cobalt violet background and then with a deep purple/magenta background of feather shapes. I had found a roller designed for painting walls that has stars scattered over the roller and thought it might work well.

As I usually do before working on the actual painting, I tested my idea on scrap paper. I put the star roller on its handle, poured some masking fluid in a tray and rolled the stars through it, making sure they were well-coated. Then I rolled it carefully across the paper so the stars wouldn't get too distorted. After the masking dried, I brushed a simple wash across it and when that dried, removed the masking with a rubber cement pickup.

Satisfied with my experiment, I cut a frisket film for the duck and rolled a star pattern across the background. After removing the frisket, I painted Winsor violet on the background around the duck, let it dry, and then removed the masking. I painted a deep rose across the entire background and followed that with several more washes to get the color depth I wanted. Unfortunately, the end result was a bit intrusive and the color was dull, so I decided to enhance it a bit with spattered gouache.

Because I would be spattering paint with a toothbrush, I didn't have to make a water-tight seal on the duck image. I cut a piece of frisket film roughly the size of the duck and laid it in place, smoothing it out before trimming it.

With a new X-acto blade in my knife, I gently cut along the outline of the duck and removed the excess film. I pressed it down firmly with my fingers, but did not burnish it down.

Using an enamel tray, I put out small dabs of gouache of a deep magenta, deep ultramarine, and permanent white. I mixed up a medium magenta and a medium blue-purple and spattered them with a flat bristle toothbrush. (Be sure to protect your work surface with newspapers!!) The size of the spatters are related to the amount of water in the paint puddle, so it takes a bit of experimenting to get the size droplets you want. Generally, the more water, the larger the droplets.

I ultimately used five or six different shades of magenta and purple, spattering until I was satisfied with the appearance of the background. (Note that, unlike watercolor which dries lighter than it appears when wet, gouache dries slightly darker.) Then I removed the frisket, pulled the masking tape off the edge of my painting, and signed it. You can see that there was a significant amount of leakage under the tape. This is not a serious problem, since I always mat my paintings, but I prefer a cleaner edge on my non-demo work. I normally use a better tape for protecting the border -- Nichiban tape -- which I discussed in this blog post a while back.

One Helluva Party & Red Sweater

Last night I went to another figure session with Sarah. Our model had some mega dreadlocks, and a fuzzy red sweater. About an hour into the 3-hour pose I started over. I decided on the second try to experiment with wilder colors in shadows. The part I'm happiest with is the suggestion of a hand. I find I spend about 2/3 of the time on the face and 1/3 on the rest (ha! - just read that was Sarah's experience as well)!

Ten years ago as a young Air Force bride, Carrie Waller picked up a "how-to" book on watercolor and taught herself to paint. She soon began teaching classes, but it wasn't until two years ago that she got serious about her own work. Shortly after the arrival of her second son, she committed herself to starting a blog and producing a painting a week -- a challenge that she has successfully met for the past two years. With her husband recently deployed to Afghanistan for six months, she is continuing her blog activities and is also exhibiting and selling her work, in addition to her responsibilities as a full-time mom.

Carrie currently has three pieces in the Randy Higbee 6" Squared show in Los Angeles, she just won first place at the Louisiana Watercolor Society's Juried Member Show, and her entry into the LWS's 41st Annual International Exhibit this past spring was featured on the show invitation. In addition, she has had a wonderful year of exhibit successes, winning awards in many of the shows she entered.

Fun with TOYS...

I was delighted to discover this weekend that my painting is featured on the postcard for the TOYS show at the Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Arts Center in Dowell (Solomons), Maryland.

Equally delightful is this excerpt from the juror's statement: This exhibit cradles an adult's mastery of craftsmanship with a child's sensibility of play. [These artists] keep one foot in the studio, and the other in the sandbox. Pablo Picasso said, "Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up." These artists have uniquely answered his query. -- Andrew Wodzianski, Professor of Art, College of Southern Maryland

The show consists of 60 pieces by 33 artists, with a mix of two- and three-dimensional works. It will run until January 8, 2012. See their website for hours and directions to the center.

So I survived the 6 mile race, (whew!) and am here to report (will post about the run tomorrow). My class in Sedona last week went swimmingly. Ok, aside from the force fed wine and dessert. The first day we woke up to snow. This was the view from my hotel balcony:

The snow eventually changed to hail, and everything melted by the end of the day ... except for way up high in the mountains. It was a good day to be inside painting.

I always seem to forget something when I travel, and this time I forgot my camera. So I had to settle for iphone pics. Above are my kids slaving away. And below are some of the paintings produced, including 4 of my demos (sold), one row up from the bottom.

We took a group photo, but it was with a better camera than mine and is being emailed to me - will post later. So I'll end with a very serious question: how many artists does it take to change a lightbulb? My kids and I were brainstorming an answer. Please tell me your ideas and I'll post some good ones tomorrow, including our favorite from last week!

So many blessings come to us disguised as curses. It's up to us to see beyond and turn them around. 2011 has been a roller coaster ride to put it mildly. Not only for myself but for a lot of my friends, family and colleagues. But my optimistic side knows there are bigger and better things right around the corner. Just follow your bliss... do what makes you happy. And things start to line up. Sometimes I call bullsh*t on this belief of mine but it does work for the most part.
